In Digiday today there is an article talking about how VOX is pivoting not toward video, but to podcasts.
Here’s the question: Are podcasts taking over media?
From the article:
Vox Media Podcast Network now generates over $10 million a year in revenue from a roster of more than 200 shows across Vox’s 14 brands, including those produced with partners like Stitcher. While Vox Media president Marty Moe wouldn’t disclose revenue figures, he said the goal is to double the eight-figure revenue business to a minimum of $20 million in 2020. In all, Vox Media worked with over 100 different podcast advertisers last year and he said he expects this number to grow this year, although the focus is on expanding hit podcasts.
I think it’s a bigger picture than “podcasts taking over”. My take is that media is more democratized now and each one is a mammoth depending on who you talk to.
My other thought is barrier to entry.
Creating audio is so much cheaper and easier than producing video.

All that said... each have their place.
So true. Media is where it needs to be. In the hands of the people. Not just multinational-media-conglomerates.
A good friend of mine and client asked me what I think of video podcasts...
Here's my general response...
There is definitely a place for them. People have to commit to watching though vs listening on the drive and what not.
My suggestion is to start out with audio. Get some traction then move to video. The overhead is much higher on video than audio.
